Episode 8- Tower of Black Sands
After a few days of heavy research, it is discovered that the Dread is much more dangerous than originally percieved. It seems that according to ancient documents, the world was once without form, and that the One original god spoke, thus creating the world. From this word, a division of chaos and cosmos was formed. However, from this division, the Knowledge emerged. The Knowledge was wicked, and it prevented the balance of chaos and cosmos. The chaos and cosmos became embodied as two beings, the Man of Light, and the Woman of Darkness, and the Knowledge interfered and kept them from uniting and creating a unified world. Out of jealousy, Knowledge molested the Man and Woman, and sired two offspring- a son by the Woman of Darkness called Dread, and a daughter by the Man of Light called Scorn.

Scorn lurks in the higher realms, and curses those that would try to ascend with arrogance and hatred, while Dread lurks in the earth, preventing those who would call down power from above by cursing the Earth. The mystic arts are the work of Knowledge, and thus the use of it invokes the curse of Dread for those on Earth. It is because of this that the early people formed a movement against magics, developing their own talents to stave off the forces of Dread. These people, the first psions, formed a group that eventually became Alma Nostra.

It is believed that Alma's disappearance and the emergence of the being calling itself Dread are not unrelated. A confidential informant has approached Alma Nostra with information regarding Alma, through the secret group called Phantom- a hidden group in Alma Nostra composed of the risen dead, members who had died in service and been returned to life in order to serve Alma. Rose is a double agent, being both the secret Aerie member, and a member of Phantom.

The team is introduced to the telepathic specialist from Phantom, the mysterious cross-dressing Wu-Mei-Long. Wu-Mei-Long has arranged the meeting with the informant, which has been requested to take place in a tower a few leagues outside of Rebus. This tower, called the Tower of Black Sands, is a ruin from ancient days.

The team is teleported to the tower, but only Rose, Wu-Mei-Long, Luka, and Zell enter the building for the meeting. Once inside, they find the tower to be occupied by djinn, efreeti, and the janni. The djinn and efreeti are negotiating an end to their thousand year war, using Earth as a middle ground, and reanimating the fallen kings buried in the tower as a means of harvesting precious gold from beneath the sands in order to serve as a mutual tribute to the Khalif of the Djinn and Sultan of the Efreet. The team has to navigate the trap filled tower, and avoid the interdimensional political conflict while trying to get to the top of the tower to meet their mysterious informant.

Ultimately, at the top of the tower, they meet with a shadowy informer who tells them Alma is working on something called the World Project, but before she can continue, she is cut down by the Djinn and the Sheik of the Efreeti. He tells the Aerie members that the woman is an enemy of theirs, and that she must be punished and put to death. Wu-Mei-Long confronts the Sheik, threatening to kill them all in order to safely acquire the needed information. Luka and Zell are repulsed by this, but Rose explains that in Phantom, some things must be done in order to protect the organization- including things like this. However, Rose stops Wu-Mei-Long, and tells her that such violence is unnessecary, considering they can just extract the information from the informant whatever her condition is- dead or alive.

Just then, Tamari appears, and the djinn attack him, claiming he is their hated enemy- the son of the Khalif and a mortal woman, he is the most dangerous threat to the Djinni populace. Tamari brushes them off like he would swat away a gnat, and suddenly, the informant morphs into Vemiel. Vemiel and Tamari tell the team that they want to help look for Alma, but the Sheik warns them that Vemiel and Tamari can't be trusted. A fight ensues between the two strangers and the Djinn, and the team gets caught in between. Tamari crushes many djinni with the power of his mind, and Vemiel begins to devour their bodies, while Rose, Zell, and Luka attempt to contain the chaos. Meanwhile, the Sheik and Wu-Mei-Long engage in combat, and Wu-Mei-Long is wounded. Rose saves her old Phantom teammate, and gathers the team in the center of the room, attempting to escape through use of a teleportation stone, but before they can get away, Vemiel and Tamari get bored and leave- but not before shattering open a stone at the top of the tower, causing a pillar of light to erupt out of it. The djinn lament, saying that the "Path of Lights" has been opened.

The team heads back to HQ, disappointed by the failure of the mission. Karin explains that the Path of Lights is an interdimensional doorway that leads to the Astral Plane, and that it might be worthwhile to investigate it. Just then, Dread materializes, possessing Wu-Mei-Long and a handful of soldiers. The team, unwilling to harm the innocent Alma Nostra soldiers, is backed into a corner. Suddenly, Disa appears and cuts them down, but proves to be ineffective in battle against the Dread. Rose and Portia also attack, but are rendered helpless.

Just then, Adrian draws the Dread into his own body, and vomits it out in the form of a black, living slime. He then uses some unknown power to banish the vile ooze, causing the Dread to retreat. Everyone is confused and taken by surprise. Adrian explains that he is not who he says he is. He explains that Alma is very important to history, and that each generation along her line has produced one woman named Alma who would lead the line of the ancient peoples towards peace. He goes on to say that he is from 3000 years in the future, where Rebus is a large city of wonders that covers half the planet- the other half of the planet is dead and uninhabitable, destroyed by Dread. He tells them that Rebus is the last bastion against the forces of Dread, which has managed to destroy and corrupt much of the universe. He tells them that he is that generation's Alma, and he returned to the past through telepathy to merge with the Alma of this time in order to stop the abuse of magic and the awakening of Dread, in order to save the future. However, something happened that caused him to instead be born in the body of a human child, and that he was trapped in the past, unable to fully complete his mission. However, he has been working with Alma to control the abuse of magic, with the goal of negating the impact of Dread in the future.

He goes on to explain aside from him, one other of the Lametalle line has returned to the past- and that he became trapped in the past, and fathered a child. The child is Luka, who is a powerful anomoly with all the gifts of the Lametalle line, making him a very important resource in the war on Dread. Apparently, those of the Lametalle line are immune to the forces of Dread, and stand alone as the only ones who can fight Dread and drive it back. This is why it is so important to locate Alma. If she is lost or killed, the Lametalle line will be wiped out, and the future will be lost.

Finally, Adrian reveals that it may be possible to locate Alma by traversing the Path of Lights in the Astral Plane. He tells them that they can go there, and search her out. The team digests this shocking revelation while preparing to leave Rebus and face the perils of the Astral Plane.

Episode 6 Summary-
During a quiet day at headquarters, the team finds themselves split up and under attack by mysterious assassins. After warding off their enemies, they meet up to find that Miserchorde is in the building, and Alma is missing. Come to find, Miserchorde is actually an employee of Alma's on the side, and that the Miserchorde they had encountered in the temple had been an imposter- but why would someone want to turn them against a total stranger? Ahriman, Adrian, and Camui find a spatial distortion in Alma's garden, and are confronted by three savage traitors : The feral shapeshifter Vemiel, the precognative Tamari, and a mysterious princess bound in chains. They claim they are searching for Alma, and create a pocket dimension around the garden, demanding that the team hand her over. Battle ensues, and Adrian has a conflict with the princess, who calls out to him for help. They are driven back, and the dimension reunifies with the Material Plane, but Alma is still missing. Where could she have gone?

Episode 7 Summary-
In order to locate Alma, Karin calls in a research team from the Alma Nostra branch Sahasrala. The team is lead by Zell Gyrne, a skarn ardent with a lot of ideas about philosophy, and Arlan, a telepath who used to be Ahriman's rival in his old post. Meanwhile, while searching for Alma, Portia is overtaken by the will of the god of Azreya, the mysterious overdeity Shahkena. Shahkena uses Portia to relate a prophecy- she claims that the Beast shall soon awaken, and the world will be bathed in darkness. Soon afterward, Arlan appears with a platoon of troops, accusing Ahriman and the others of kidnapping Alma. They try to fight off Arlan's treachery, but are beaten and taken into captivity. Deep within the Underground Prison underneath the city, Ahriman, Luka, and Zell awaken, strapped into torture devices by Arlan. Arlan doesn't seem to be himself, and he tells them he has something special planned for all of them. The area is sealed, blocking all telepathy and interdimensional travel- but luckily, Zell's unique racial incarnum abilities and Luka's youthful wiriness allow the three of them to escape. They sneak through the chamber, and free the others, and ultimately corner Arlan in a central conference chamber transformed into a mysterious ritual room. In this room, they find Arlan, who summons forth a being of black smoke called the Dread. A wild battle ensues, and the Dread proves to be more difficult than first imagined. The only way the team can defeat him is by making use of force abilities, and by bending the space around the being in order to distort it's physical form. They manage to weaken the Dread, just in time for Portia and a mysterious woman with black hair to rush in and annihilate it. What is this Dread, and how does it relate to Portia's prophecy? And what about Alma's disappearance?

Notable changes-

Ahriman: In Episode 6, Ahriman's previous life begins to show through. He develops the ability to enter a new state of mind, in which he becomes Maion once more. His body becomes that of a celestial, and he gains a portion of his old divinity back. Furthermore, Ahriman has begun to express a romantic interest in Portia, and the two of them spend a deal of time together, discussing religion and travelling the Diamond District in their down time.

Disa: As Ahriman's old indentity becomes more clear, Disa begins to lose some of her old clarity. Her mind is constantly being exchanged between three identities- the old Disa, the mind of a child named Disa, who is the rebirth of the original petitioner who became Zoe Sophia, and Zoe, the wrathful archon who resents being brought back to life. The three struggle for control, making Ahriman very confused and troubled. At the end of episode 6, Zoe takes control and even tells Ahriman she will eventually kill him for committing the sins that have bound her to her current body.

Camui: After recieving a troubling letter from her master, Kiseki, Camui goes on hiatus back to her homelands to attend to personal business. This happens at the end of Episode 6.

Adrian: Adrian tearfully relates to Karin after his encounter with the princess that she is "his true self", and secretly tells her the truth behind his origins.

Episode 5- Return to Nothing
3 weeks have passed since the Kawonia incident. Everyone had been able to recover, Luka included. Portia remains in Rebus, and has been housed in Anahata with the rest of the team.

Alma awakened the team at 4am to alert them of some bad news- a grisly double murder had occurred in the warehouse district of Rebus, during which an unregistered artifact was stolen. Portia, still serving as ambassador, agreed to help out with the investigation. Tyler was selected to go because of his arcane expertise, and Ahriman was sent because of his intimate knowledge of artifacts and magic items. The three of them- along with Disa serving as a bodyguard- went to the warehouse and searched for clues.

The bodies had been lacerated with a strange pattern that Portia recognized as a symbol of Malaraln, an ancient demon of apocalyptic goals. However, the cause of death was heavy necrosis induced by exposure to intense negative energy. The warehouse operators and several of Alma's police force were on the scene, and unable to identify the missing object, which had just been recieved that day in the city port from House Alarando.

Karin was sent for to do an object reading. She uncovered that the stolen object was some sort of bowl shaped object. They also uncovered that while the item had been shipped by the Alarando, it had been ordered by the owner of Lord Warden in the Diamond District. The team went to question the owner of the shop after his store opened that morning. He told them that the object was a one of a kind, but not too terribly valuable. He said it was designed to reduce objects placed within it to their base elements and separate those components. Why it was made was uncertain, but he had hoped to recreate it and perhaps figure out it's purpose in order to then sell it to the right market for a healthy profit. Ahriman found it somewhat puzzling that someone would take the time to infiltrate a heavy guarded area and kill two people to obtain an object with very little street value and no immediately useful powers- especially considering the raw worth of all the ignored items left in the warehouse.

At that time, a mysterious man entered the shop- the same man who the team had encountered while investigating Lord Warden during the Granmiglone incident. He had come to claim his order from that day- two highly polished, high grade elementite staves called stabilizers. Portia was immediately suspicious, particularly after she attempted to detect evil, only to have her divination blocked and her actions loudly criticized by the man. The team questioned the owner of Lord Warden about this man, who he claimed was a wealthy and legitimate customer.

After they left, the man cornered them, and told them not to interfere in his business. An argument erupted, but the man teleported away before weapons could be drawn. Frustrated, the team went back to Karin to see what they could find about Malaraln. After doing some research, they learned that Malaraln was one of the old demons who existed to consume everything at the end of the world. He was killed by the sorcerer Alexander during a time called the War of All Heavens several hundred years ago.

Malaraln was a terrible, mindless demon with five gaping mouths, always eating and devouring everything around him. He was a mad god of all-consuming darkness, and had been the idol of many an apocalypse cult during his day.

While researching, a female Alma Nostra member named Claudia interrupted the team with urgent news- another murder had been discovered in the warehouse district, in a sealed warehouse. An unidentified object had been stolen this time, as well. The team and Claudia rushed to the scene, and found a ghastly sight- the entire warehouse chamber was covered in blood and viscera. Tyler could see that the vicious killing was the work of both swordplay and sorcery, as the victim had first been seared with the power of a warlock's eldritch blast and then hacked to pieces.

As they investigated, they were alerted by a loud cry- another killing was taking place in the next warehouse. Disa had already responded, and was using her body as a shield to come between the attacker and the poor victim. The team ran to her aid, and were then surrounded by a pack of mad cultists devoted to Malaraln. Their leader cast a spell that sucked Disa, Karin, Claudia, and the wounded victim into a pocket dimension, and then they swarmed Ahriman, Portia, and Tyler with the intent to kill.

The battle on both sides was grisly. While Malaraln cult warlocks hammered away at Karin and Disa with eldritch blasts and dark invocations in an alien other space, Malaraln's clerics savagely attacked the team. While Tyler and Portia had their hands full, Ahriman was mortally wounded. Luckily, they managed to get the upper hand, and Portia laid her hands upon Ahriman not a second too soon, using her sacred touch to rekindle the spark of life within the nomad.

In the other space, it looked bleak. Disa was too slow to move out of the range of the warlocks blasts, and Karin was unable to defend herself as she had not come prepared for battle. Only Claudia, a well trained psychic warrior, was able to get through the crossfire, and she tackled and attacked the one cult member who appeared to be concentrating on keeping the pocket dimension intact. By breaking his concentration, she caused the bubble world to burst, and sent her friends back to the material world.

Unfortunately, the cult managed to kidnap Claudia as a result. Portia had obtained the stolen object, one of the crystallized "mouths" of Malaraln, which sealed away his essence. Their plot was clear now- By using the chalice, which they had identified as the Chalice of Returning to Nothing, they would offer a sacrifice to Malaraln, and separate the living sacrifice into it's basest elements. Once the body was reduced to it's purest form, they would "feed" the mouths by bathing them in the elemental properties, and reawaken the spirit of Malaraln, whom Alexander had sealed in his own hunger.

The cult's leader appeared, and told them that he would kill Claudia if they did not return the last stone to them. The team met at Anahata and consulted Alma. Alma did not want to lose anyone, but also was wary of letting them have the stone. She feared that if Malaraln was restored, he would devour not only Rebus, but the entire continent. A plan was formulated- they would leave the stone in the required spot, but they would leave behind a spy in the form of a psicrystal to watch the cultists, and trace the teleport.

This worked out for them, and they found out that the cult hideout was in the sewers beneath Rebus. They found their way into the stronghold, just in the nick of time. The cult was ready to sacrifice Claudia to the chalice. Ahriman teleported to the altar with Tyler, and they freed the girl. Portia challenged the cult leader to a duel, and mortally wounded him. He then threw himself into the cauldron, and offered himself up to Malaraln.

The ritual began, but something interrupted. As the elements began to refine, a portal opened, and three babaus and a retriever spilled forth. Apparently, the device had been trapped so that anyone trying to revive the dead fiend would summon up a retriever specifically ordered to return the mouths to the Abyss and slay anyone present. The cultists, once worked into a suicidal frenzy at the thought of being devoured by their lord, were now terrified at their apparent death sentence. They were promptly slain, and the creatures turned their attention on the team.

While Tyler struggled with the sneaky babau, Ahriman took to the air and offered cover from above, and Portia went after the lumbering retriever. A brutal battle took place, but after some dangerous manuever and a bit of luck, they managed to take down their foes and seal the gate.

Just then, the man from Lord Warden appeared yet again. He told them he was glad they managed to complete their job, even though he knew that Malaraln wouldn't come back to life. He said he had been too careful. He then destroyed the mouths, and stated he didn't want anyone trying to undo his work. Portia deduced that he was actually the Alexander of myth, and he claimed this was true. He explained to them that he had waged a war with the outsiders because he felt that they were too eager to interfere with the lives of mortals. He felt that people should be self reliant, and not dependant on the whims and favors of impartial, outside beings. He said that he and Alma were essentially alike, since they wished to create a world free of reckless power. He told them that magic was a result of fallen outsiders being reborn as mortals.

Then, without saying much more, he disappeared. Later, at Anahata, the events of the day were discussed. No one was sure what to think. Disa became very upset, something atypical for her. She said that Alexander was dangerous. She stormed out. Ahriman went to follow, and Alma dismissed everyone.

Ahriman found Disa, who scolded him for coming so close to death. She told him that he can't expect to keep coming back. Ahriman was puzzled, and she told him she would tell him what she meant, right before stabbing him. Ahriman awoke in another place, and Disa explained to him the nature of their existence. Hundreds of years ago, Alexander lead an attack on all the outer planes. Disa had been a high archon named Zoe Sophia, and Ahriman had been an archon named Maion, who controlled the flow of time. They had been lovers, but when Alexander attacked, Zoe was killed by him. So Maion broke the laws of the heavens and attempted to tear the very essence that composed Zoe from the fabric of heaven and reform her. He was arrested, and stripped of his powers before being put to death. Due to a fluke, or perhaps destiny, part of his soul was cast aside instead of being reabsorbed into the heavens, and he was reborn as Asre Cavananto, a rilkan child. Meanwhile, Maion's ritual had not been a total failure. One of the mortal souls that had evolved into Zoe had managed to be liberated from the plane itself, and it was reborn. It took residence in the synthetic body that Maion had built for Zoe. This soul was named Disa. Disa, considered to be an abomination, was lead out of heaven, and sent to the material world.

There, she sought out Maion, who had only vague and cloudy memories of his past life. The two of them had been together ever since. Then, Ahriman woke up. He begged Disa to tell him more, but it appeared that her moments of clarity were a passing thing- and now, she had reverted to being regular, laconic Disa once more.

Meanwhile, Camui and Tyler shared a moment concerning Camui's trainer and adoptive mother, who was dying of illness, and Karin and Adrian had yet another puzzling exchange- this time about Ahriman. The two psions continue to reveal that they know much more than they seem, but it is still unclear what they are plotting, and who can be trusted.

Episode 4: Sacred Blood
Alma awakened everyone in the middle of the night with an emergency- 12 local children had been kidnapped by unknown individuals making use of necromancy. Furthermore, Karin had gone out on her own to find the children. Alma was very concerned, and sent the team to A) find Karin and assist her if possible, and then B) return to Anahata to meet up with an envoy from Azreya, a neighboring country that is renowned for it's experience in handling the undead and users of dark magic.

They explored the library in hopes of finding clues, and found three unusual details. First of all, the library floor had been dirtied with muddy footsteps, even though it had not rained in days. Secondly, a mysterious Azreyan sword had been hidden away, with a note attached for Karin. The note stated that the sword was a gift from an individual known only as "P". Finally, a book on necromancy had been left out in the public portion of the library, opened to a page on animating corpses.

Further investigation led the team to explore the area outside the outskirts of town. In a nearby forest, an old abandoned chapel has been the subject of haunting rumors for years. In light of the new developments, the team decided to search the area. They uncovered the exsanguinated remains of unfortunate woodsmen, and packs of ghasts that had made the forests surrounding the chapel their new feeding ground.

In the first encounter, Ahriman was badly mauled by ghouls, who paralyzed him. Disa stepped in to guard him, tearing the creatures apart with powerful, psionically charged blows, while Camui and Luka tangled with ghasts and a roaming ghost.

After some time searching the area, they found Karin tending to a wounded Azreyan man. He had been travelling into Rebus with a woman known as the Countess, when they were ambushed by a vampire and some ghouls. The ghouls gave him ghoul fever, and he was separated from the Countess. Ahriman knew that if his fever was not tended to, he would soon die and become one of the undead, so he teleported him back to the Aeria medical center to be treated. Adrian and Karin went off on their own to find the missing children, while Disa, Camui, and Luka headed to the chapel to try and find any sign of the vampires, the kidnappers, or the mysterious Countess.

At the chapel, a female vampire named Kawonia confronted them. She explained to them that she was a former opera singer and a mother whose child had been executed years ago by an overly zealous town elder. The elder had accused her son of being a demon because of the special abilities he had displayed, sending his mother into an eternity of mourning. However, she claimed she would soon have a new family. She raised several lifeless bodies that looked like children. She said that they were without souls, but they kept her company. She then told them that soon, she would have her own REAL children, as soon as she and her "husband" found them in the forest. It seems several of them had run away, and now she needed to find them again.

Just then, her husband appeared, bloodied and beaten. He claimed that a "terrible monster" had stolen their babies, and then he began to pass out. She claimed that he was low on blood, and needed to be fed- and as luck would have it, they had some on hand. She summoned up more "children", which transformed into ghouls, and then called forth a flight of ghosts. Just then, a blonde woman with an Azreyan sword appeared, dressed in black. She carried herself with the pride of a holy Azreyan warrior, and condemned the vampiress for her wicked deeds, and told her that if she required blood, she would have to take it from her, or from none at all. She requested the team's aid, and the four fighters became embroiled in a bloodsoaked battle for survival against the vampires and their makeshift "family."

At some point during the combat, Kawonia bit Luka, who began to emit blinding, white hot psionic fire. First, the three remaining warriors killed the vampires, and then attempted to subdue Luka. Luka threw them about like paper dolls and burned them unintentionally with his out of control psionic wrath. Karin arrived, and saw what was happening, and tried to help. Luka began to move towards the chapel, and Karin foretold that he had been altered by Kawonia and would revive her in the chapel.

Just then, Adrian arrived and everyone worked to try and prevent Luka from entering the church doors. Finally, he was able to be taken down, and the hold on him was broken. He returned to normal, although he had been badly wounded.

Karin stated that she suspected that Kawonia had been using an artifact in an attempt to become a human woman again. The Azreyan woman introduced herself as Portia De Medici, a Countess of the De Medici family of Azreya. She had been accompanying the man they found in the forest to Anahata to aid them with the undead problem, but had been ambushed and separated. Portia located the remaining children, placed in a magical sleep in a sealed room in the chapel basement. Adrian telepathically contacted Ahriman, and called him to the site to help get the children safely out of the ruin.

Meanwhile, Camui gave Disa an origami swan, telling her that she should never think of herself as a toy.

Once everyone had been safely teleported back to the base, they got the children back to their parents, and everyone went to their rooms. Alma prepared a room for Portia, so that she could at least stay in comfort for the next few days.

In Karin's room, Karin toyed with the sword Portia had given her, and spoke that she was fearful for her life, and now felt sorry that Portia had gotten involved. In Ahriman's chamber, Ahriman repaired Disa. Disa reprimanded him about trying to recapture what had been lost, a comment he did not understand. He told her that the new formula was almost complete, and when it was, the two of them might finally understand some of the things she said.

Meanwhile, in another plane, a familiar white-haired man sits in an ivory palace. The palace is moving through a grey, swirling sky. The man states that he will be at the "pool" soon, and then will be able to retrieve the "last of them". He laughs to himself that no lock is without a key, and that "they" are foolish for trying to "keep him away."

At that moment, in the living quarters, Camui overhears Tyler speaking in his sleep, talking something about someone or something called Azrael. In Luka's room, Adrian watches Luka sleep, and says that he is surprised to find someone who wasn't part of the plan, but he glad he did.

Episode 3: Sloth and Gluttony
Alma awoke the team early in the morning to alert them that a new mission had come up. She told them that a series of unusual burglaries had been plaguing the Diamond District. These burglars had not only stolen a large amount of jewels and art objects, but have also taken many magic items. Alma was concerned that a surge of illegally obtained magic items on the black market could be dangerous, so she sent Ahriman, Adrian, and Tyler to investigate.

The trio first went to Lord Warden in the Diamond District. Ahriman encountered a dark-skinned magician who was making demands of the owner of Lord Warden. This man was able to detect when Adrian read his thoughts, and said he knew Ahriman from somewhere. Ahriman said he must have been mistaken, but became notably shaken after the encounter. They then interviewed the owner of Lord Warden, who explained that he had only the highest level of magical traps and alarms placed on his shop, and that whoever has been stealing from them must have been doing so through the use of extradimensional magic.

They then interviewed Elethel, the owner of Ancestor's Call. His story matched the owner of Lord Warden's. While investigating the shop, Adrian and Tyler saw a man lurking in the alley behind the shop. They cornered him, but discovered that he was just a local gambler hiding out from some loan sharks.

Then, circumstance brought them to the Aine Institute to the south of the district, where they discovered that a shipment of synthrite had also been stolen. The perpetrator did so in the same fashion used by the burglars in the other cases, but this time someone managed to catch a brief glimpse of him. He was described as a man wearing a nondescript black hooded robe.

The team further investigated the town, questioning locals and checking out areas businesses and suspicious happenings. They came across a store selling fake magic items, a hidden treasure in a local park, and a local nomad offering his services to the masses. The nomad told them that he had detected some dimensional distortions in town.

The team stopped for a bite to eat, when suddenly a scream from a local art gallery interrupted their meal. A man in a black robe moving at incredible speed darted past them with an armful of priceless art. Ahriman took to the air, and the team chased the man around town. It is then that they discovered the man's secret- he was, in fact, an ethereal filcher disguised as a man by magic. Ahriman finally managed to corner the filcher, but it escaped into the ethereal plane.

The next day, they managed to find the filcher's den by seeking out the source of the dimensional distortions in town. The filchers had nested in an abandoned well behind Von Muir's House of Music. The team climbed into the well, where they discovered that the filchers were being controlled by a morbidly obese, levitating sorcerer named Granmiglone. Granmiglone had recently had his license revoked for misuse of magic by Alma, so he had subjegated the filchers in order to steal magic items that he felt he was entitled to own. However, due to the filchers' nature, they ended up stealing much more than that, and Granmiglone acquired a massive hoard of treasure as a result.

Granmiglone was incensed when he found that the team was from Alma Nostra, and they had been sent to arrest him. He commanded his squadron of filchers to swarm and attack, and then he took to the air, and surrounded himself in a shell of protective magic. Ahriman took after him by flying, and Tyler and Adrian became surrounded by grasping, biting filchers. Ahriman found little luck in assaulting the overly defended mage.

The battle raged on, and slowly the filchers were beaten back, but they had been unable to land a single hit on Granmiglone. Finally, Ahriman and Adrian tagteamed the corpulent glutton- Ahriman hailed him with crystal shards from above while Adrian animated the very treasure he had collected and set it on him. Eventually, his magic faded, and he was low of magical power and health. Fearing for his life, he teleported to safety with the last of his strength, only to be arrested by Alma Nostra representatives outside of town.

Meanwhile, back in Alma Nostra, the team returned the stolen goods to their rightful owner. Alma rewarded the team with new equipment and a sum of money.

New Characters-

Granmiglone
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Class: Sorcerer
Age: 46
Alignment: Neutral Evil

Weighing in at a whopping 435 pounds, Granmiglone was once a well known member of the Bretheren of Sorcery, but he was removed from their ranks after a debaucle involving a gross overuse of his power. Granmiglone's obese form is a side effect of a curse placed on him by the Bretheren upon his exile, causing him to take a shape appropriate for one of such sloth and gluttony. Even despite his crippling condition, he will not be hindered in his constant search for power and sensation, and uses powerful magic for the most simple of tasks. He has slowly lost the ability to travel great distances over the years, relying on levitation and teleportation magic to move even short distances. He is the textbook example of not only the harsh effects that an over-reliance on magic can have on society, but also a classic case of someone who "swats the fly with a sledgehammer". In combat, he floats from a safe distance above his quarry, and puts up elaborate and complex barriers to protect himself from harm. Once he feels safely tucked away, he hammers away at even the weakest of foes with maximized fireballs, energy draining attacks, and mighty earthquakes. After being weakened by Adrian, Ahriman, and Tyler, he escaped, but was captured by Alma's Robins and Falcons, and taken to Sahasrala to be "quieted."

Location: Diamond District
Rebus' Diamond District earned it's name 100 years ago, when it became the unofficial central market for gems and precious metals in the city. Over the years, the Diamond District became a prosperous trade district, and a variety of higher quality services and goods became available in addition to gems. This includes magical items- in fact, the Diamond District is home to most of Rebus's licensed magical items dealers, although their supply is somewhat limited.

Over the years, the district has attracted a rather selective clientele, due to it's high prices and luxurious shops. The Deva's Channel runs right through the center of the district, which is located directly south of Anahata. The majority of the town's activity takes place on the western side of the channel. Rows of jewelers and artisan shops line the open, cobbled streets, and the Aine Institute occupies a beautiful landscaped lot to the south of the central trade area. Some notable locations in the western half of the district include the two licensed magic item dealers- Lord Warden and Ancestor's Call.

Lord Warden's was formerly an upscale jewelry store until about 30 years ago, when the grandson of the store's founder obtained his license, and converted the store to a magic item shop in order to fund his research and to distribute his arcane discoveries. Lord Warden's is a large, two story shop that has a very nice selection of lower level magic items. Most of these are minor magical items designed to make the day to day life of those who can afford them easier- self sweeping brooms, magical kitchenware, and basic mystical novelties. However, Lord Warden's usually does carry a small stock of magical items that would be more lucrative to those with adventurous inclinations, although these are most often below the price of 4000 GP, and usually limited to a supply of 3 to 5 items of such value at any given time. Occasionally, the shop offers a much rarer and more expensive item for sale, although these are unique items with prices elevated not only by rarity but by the demand of wealthy collectors, scholars, and accomplished adventurers.

Ancestor's Call is less affluent than it's competitor, but has no lack of business because of it. Ancestor's Call carries all varietys of spell reagents and components, and also stocks many minor magical items of universal use. However, more interesting is their selection of scrolls and spellbooks. Most of these are fairly underwhelming, limited to spells of selective effect. However, on occasion, very powerful and rare spells are put up for sale. The owner of the Call (as it is called by the locals), a man by the name of Elethel, is an avid scholar of the lost magical arts, and is often willing to trade goods and services for scrolls and information. Ancestor's Call also has a wide library of spellbooks- each and every spell ever carried by the store has been recorded in a spellbook for posterity. Although these spellbooks are not for sale, Elethel can occasionally be persuaded to allow one to peruse the tomes for a hefty fee.

Other notable shops on the western side include Lilah's, run by a middle aged woman named Lilah famous for her unique herbal blends. She also carries imported magical potions- making her shop a place often frequented by travelers, adventurers, and mercenaries. Also worth checking out are Von Muir's House of Music (a shop carrying many masterwork musical intruments), Petra's, a grocery store that carries psionically and alchemically created foods, and Camellia, a quaint teahouse that is a favorite spot of Alma's.

The eastern side of the district has shops as well, but also has a variety of smaller residential buildings. These buildings, mostly tiny apartments and stylish villas, are the homes of many of the employees of area businesses. However, a recent trend has caused these buildings to become a hot housing commodity for local youths of rich families, who seek not only to establish a sense of independance from their parents, but also wish to be immersed in all the glamour and luxury Rebus' most famous district has to offer.

Some notable locations on the eastern half of the district include the Alabaster Outdoor Theatre, where many a famous play has been performed, and Oldham's Gallery, a place where fine art and sculpture are displayed. There are also many psionic individuals who have set up shop in this district. Seers often lend their services to locals in the form of fortune telling, another trendy hobby that has become en vogue with the wealthy in Rebus. Egoists serve as a costly, but more natural alternative to physicians, and local nomads make a killing by offering exorbitantly priced teleportation services to those who can't be bothered with the time-consuming processes of regular travel.

Also located in the eastern district are the requisite Communication Buildings set up by Alma for use by Alma Nostra and Aerie Members, and the Eldritch Registry, the building where all magical licensures and the registration of magical items are handled.

All in all, Rebus's Diamond District is a beautiful place, full of life and the spirit of trade. It is a paragon of a free trade city, and is often called the Best Face of Rebus. Tourists flock to the area in droves, and the residential areas outlying the district have the highest concentration of dwarven and rilkan immigrants in the city. If you stop by Rebus, be sure to at least visit the Diamond District- you'll be glad you did!

Episode 2: Suspicion
Summary:
The team was commissioned by Alma to further investigate the Annulus rings. They met up with Karin Ulrich, a member of Alma Nostra and a reference librarian for Anahata. Karin uses object reading to find out where the Annulus rings originated, and has a vision of a woman in white standing in a temple. This leads them to investigate the Sai-buda Temple in Rebus, and eventually causes the team to suspect that they may be involved in the appearance of the Annulus rings.

They infiltrated the chapel, first by sneaking in with the aid of Karin's clairsentient sight, and again when Ahriman pretended to be a great rilkan painter by the name of Ghirartaelle, and bluffed his way into the temple under the ruse that he was commissioned to paint a fresca on the ceiling.

In the chapel, they were amazed by the sight of a massive diamond statue of a woman, surrounded by a disc of opaline that looks identical to the Annulus. They met with a woman claiming to be the Sister of the Diamond Mother, but she ended up being an assassin who had apparently been expecting Aerie to show up. A brutal battle ensued, and everyone was badly beaten. However, they managed to finally corner the elusive and deadly assassin, but he teleported away before they could kill him- and took with him a large pearl from the crown of the Diamond Mother idol called the Pearl of Cosmic Thought.

They discovered their assailant was an assassin called the Misericorde, named after the weapon of a legendary hero. After some scrutiny, Alma and Ahriman deduced that the incidents were unrelated, but they decided it would be best to stay on guard against not only the Annulus ring trading, but also against any further attacks by the mysterious Misericorde.

Before everyone wanders off to treat their wounds, Disa confronts Alma, and tells her she needs to be careful, because "even the most skilled falconer may get clawed." Alma accepts her warning with thanks, and is left to wonder why the warforged reminds her so much of someone in her past. Meanwhile, Adrian and Karin leave Anahata to eat in the nearby cafe, but they exchange words. Adrian reveals that he knew that Karin's vision was a fake, and she claims she was merely trying to get them to stop Misericorde. She then tells Adrian she knows all about his own goals, and he tells her to be very careful of what she does. She asks him if that is a threat, and he smiles with a disturbing amount of insincerity, and says that he'd never dream of threatening her. She then says that she might have to kill him, but then laughs and says she loves how they can joke with each other.

New Characters-

New Terms-

Anahata- An Alma Nostra base, where Aerie is located. It is in the direct center of Rebus.
Svadisthana- An Alma Nostra base to the south. Ahriman was transferred from there, where he served on part of the team that developed medicinal synthrite. It is located in the city of the same name.
Synthrite- A mind enhancing drug that increases the psionic strength of it's user, and has a side effect of clairsentient visions.
Opaline- A jade-like stone that has a lot in common with ectoplasmic crystal. It is the material from which the Annulus and it's minor rings were created.
Sai-buda- A transcendantal religion that has a temple in Rebus. Camui is a practitioner of this belief.

Episode 1: Meeting
The story begins as Ahriman is called into Alma's office. There, he meets with Adrian and Alma, and a new team is formed, composed of Adrian, Ahriman, Disa, and Camui. Alma tells them that rumors of an object called an Annulus have been circulating, and that Alma believes that members of some sort of religious organization within the city have obtained a flawed imitation of the original Annulus.

She orders the team to find the ones who have it, and obtain the Annulus from them. The team investigated the surrounding area, and eventually ended up getting involved in a skirmish with some thugs in an alley. The thugs were wearing pendants with crude miniature Annulus rings on them, causing them to suspect that there may in fact be a cult developing in Rebus dedicated to the eradication of those with psionic talent.

The team eventually discovered that a man named Tiamat had possession of the Annulus, and they tracked him to a nearby warehouse. Upon entering the warehouse, they found Tiamat and his goons assaulting a teenage boy, and a fight erupted. Ahriman time-hopped the Annulus out of the battle, giving the team 30 seconds to defeat Tiamat before it returned and they were exposed to it's harmful energies.

Camui engaged a pack of Tiamat's rogues, and Disa locked horns with the gang's divine spellcaster, a female favored soul wearing white fur and wielding a morningstar. Ahriman and Adrian provided support from a safe location, and the mysterious teenage boy dueled Tiamat.

Disa channeled a powerful strike by expending her psionic focus, and doing so caused her to behave strangely. Meanwhile, the mysterious boy let loose a blast of psionic wrath, which defeated Tiamat. However, Tiamat managed to heal himself just enough to get back up, just as the Annulus rematerialized in the timestream. He grabbed it, and told them all that he had God's blessing, and that they were fools to stand in the way of his god.

Then, the boy unleashed another blast, and destroyed the Annulus. The team drove off the gang members, and took the boy, named Luka, back to Alma to explain everything. Luka told everyone that there were several minor Annulus rings, and that many people who have been obtaining them have been going mad, and dedicating themselves to the whim of some mysterious god. Alma asked Luka to join Aerie, and she introduced a new recruit by the name of Tyler. She told them that they would be further pursuing the Annulus rings, but not until the next day.

The World
Welcome to the world of Maya, a world where magic reigns supreme.

In this world, many people suffer at the hands of irresponsible magicians who wield the power of the universe for selfish purposes, and the ancient artifacts created by these individuals are sought after by those who seek to make use of this power.

In this world, a secret organization slowly establishes itself in resistance to this. Valuing discipline, enlightenment, and balance, this organization seeks to cultivate and control the use of the magical arts, and wean the people of the world away from it, teaching them to be dependant on their own powers and the natural gifts that lie within us all. Calling themselves Alma Nostra, or "Our Soul", this group is met with opposition by those who have become accustomed to the prestige and conveniance magic provides them, but in the city of Rebus, Alma Nostra has managed to create an uneasy balance.

In Rebus, magic is carefully policed by Aerie, a special branch of Alma Nostra specializing in the control of magical item trade and the illegal usage of magic. Led by the mysterious Alma, they patrol the dark streets of Rebus, rooting out malicious wizards and breaking up magic item smuggling rings through use of psionic power.

Cast-

Alma
Race: Appears to be human
Gender: Female
Class: Unknown
Age: Unknown, but appears quite old
Alignment: Unknown

Alma is the leader of Aerie, and the founder of Alma Nostra. Not much is known about her, but those in Aerie see her as a kind and wise matriarch.

Adrian Lametalle
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Class: Harmonizer
Age: 25
Alignment: Unknown

Adrian has been a member of Aerie for some time. Although Alma is ultimately the final authority, Adrian is the one who is generally recognized as the team leader among Aerie. He is a mysterious young man with blonde hair, bright blue eyes, and an eccentric but refined fashion sense. He is congenial and very open, perhaps a trait developed because of his ability to link minds with others and bring others closer together. However, he is also quite mysterious at times, leaving some to wonder just how sincere the young man truly is. Adrian's codename is 'Halcyon".

Ahriman
Race: Rilkan
Gender: Male
Class: Nomad
Age: 30
Alignment: Neutral Good

Ahriman is a member of Alma Nostra who was recently transferred to Aerie at Alma's request. He is exceptionally talented with the use of timespace alteration powers, and is well read and learned. He knows a great deal about history, the nature of psionics, and about the planes and dimensions. He is always accompanied by his psicrystal Chaylon, and the warforged Disa. Although he is often very cerebral, he is also gregarious and has a dry sense of humor. He enjoys conversation, and in his spare time, he studies political science and collects wine. Ahriman's codename is "Swallow".

Camui Azuhara
Race: Human
Gender: Female
Class: Monk
Age: 31
Alignment: Lawful Good

Camui is also a member of Aerie, although she began her career as a martial artist in the lands far east of Rebus. Camui is a contemplative woman, who prefers to sit back and observe a situation before becoming directly involved. She is very obediant to her superiors, loyal to her teammates, and self-motivated to hone her talents. She has a personal stake in Aerie's business, as she lost her family to a plague created by a reckless sorcerer. Camui has a weird relationship with Tyler, and calls him "Dodo", rather than his codename. Her own codename is "Crane".

Disa
Race: Warforged
Gender: Considers herself female
Class: Psychic Warrior
Age: Unknown
Alignment: True Neutral

Disa is a warforged warrior who is always seen with Ahriman. The two of them came to Alma Nostra 6 years ago, and apparently have a long history with each other. Disa sees Ahriman as a caretaker of sorts, and never questions his motives or goals. However, Disa sometimes exhibits strange behavior, in which she makes cryptic statements and references to things that have never happened. She tends to project her empathy towards the magic items they collect, always saddened when one needs to be destroyed. She claims this is because they remind her of herself in some way. Rumor has it that Ahriman may have created Disa long ago, although neither individual has ever answered any inquiries about this topic. Originally, Ahriman and Alma had assigned her the codename "Bluebird", but Disa protested, and changed it to "Egg".

Luka Romanov
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Class: Wilder
Age: 17
Alignment: Chaotic Good

Luka is a young man living in Rebus who used to be a member of a gang. However, when his gang leader Tiamat came into possession of an object called a Lesser Annulus, he ended up fighting his gang, and undertaking a personal mission to eliminate all of the Lesser Annulus. Luka is a spontaneous boy, prone to emotional outbursts and attitudinal behavior. In his young body, however, sleeps a dangerous and reckless power. After meeting up with Aerie, Luka was taken into the organization by Alma, who seeks to hone the boy's mighty power. Luka has not been given a codename as of yet.

Tyler "Oberon"
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Class: Spellthief
Age: 17
Alignment: Chaotic Good

Tyler is the newest recruit to Aerie, and the most unusual of them. He not only has no shred of psionic talent, but is also a user of arcane magic. However, his unusual ability to steal spells and magical energy away from other casters has intrigued Alma, who seeks to use him in order to better suppress the use of magic in her city. As a form of payment for his services, Tyler is permitted to use magic without penalty of law, and was awarded a Class S license for the use of magic items. Tyler grew up in a prestigious family, but seems to have abandoned his old life. He and Camui know each other from someplace in their past. Tyler's codename is "Albatross", but he insists on being called the "Eternal Gigalo."

Templated characters are available at the discretion of the DM.

Other Rules:
Each player can have up to 2 characters. These characters can both be active at once, but you can only play one at a time. This means that one character must remain off-duty in Aerie HQ while the other is out on a mission. In some rare cases, a player will be allowed to play 2 characters at once, but this is at the DM's discretion, and will not be happening regularly.

Each non-psionic character is required to take the Hidden Talent feat on Level 1. Naturally psionic races are exempt from this rule, as are classes that have gestalted Psychic Warrior, Psion, Wilder, Soulknife, Psychic Rogue, Harmonizer, or Mystic Ninja levels.
